Irvine 'SOS' school-funding measure passes
By THOMAS MARTINEZ

IRVINE – The Irvine Support Our Schools Initiative of 2012, which will provide $4 million in city funding to local public schools for each of the next three academic years, passed with a whopping 68.7 percent of the vote.

The initiative, Measure BB, garnered 36,973 yes votes and 16,823 no votes, according to unofficial results from Orange County Registrar of Voters.

The funding goes mainly to Irvine Unified School District, with some going to Tustin Unified and Santa Ana Unified in the proportion of Irvine students that those districts serve. The city's current funding of $1.5 million annually expires after the 2012-13 school year.

The measure will not directly raise taxes or revenue. The funds will come from Irvine's city coffers.
