Oak Creek Elementary collects 1,038 lbs of pennies
Students at Oak Creek Elementary School have made a heavy contribution.
The students collected pennies during Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 22 to 26. By the end of the week, the kids had raised 1,038 lbs of pennies to donate to Pennies for Prevention. The pennies were loaded onto four SUVs and driven to City Hall to be weighed.
The money will help fund drug prevention programs in Irvine, organizers said.
Three classes alone collected more than 100 pounds of pennies, organizers said.
